The Maple Street Gateway under construction, August 2008  Gateway pillar detail New entries at each residence allow barrier free access as well as a "front porch" for seniors to socialize. | Project Description: The Big Rapids Housing Commission undertook a major landscape improvement project at Parkview Village South, a seniors housing complex. As part of an effort to provide barrier free access to all 67 housing units, Manning Design, LLC and PKB Architects were retained in 2007 to design new walks, new landscaping, outdoor areas for social gathering, and a new pedestrian gateway. Marlies Manning interviewed residents and designed a survey to determine the needs of the residents relative to their outdoor living environment. In response, Manning Design designed new walk configurations, seating/resting areas, social gathering spaces, landscaping, and a pedestrian gateway (shown at left). The Depot serves as a trailhead for the Pere Marquette Trail and the White Pine Trail. The Depot also houses the Reed City Chamber of Commerce, the Reed City DDA, as well as provides a community meeting room, and public restrooms. Manning Design provided site design, construction documentation, and construction observation services. | Project Description: Manning Design, LLC was hired to design the site for a new municipal building in Reed City, Michigan. The site will serve as the trailhead for the crossroads of two Rails-to-Trails: the Pere Marquette and the White Pine trails. The new building will house the Chamber of Commerce and DDA offices and a community meeting room. The building design is reminiscent of the original Reed City depot that had been located along the Pere Marquette railroad. Unique features of the site design include: a snowmelt system under the brick plaza and handicap parking area, a historical luggage cart displayed on site, a replica of a water tower serving as an informational kiosk,a firepit and a fireplace located under the picnic pavilion. | Project Description: Manning Design,LLC is being retained to develop Concept Design drawings through Design Development for the Big Rapids Streetscape Project. In addition, Marlies will design Pocket Park and the new Riverwalk Gateway Connection pictured to the left. Big Rapids was selected as one of six communities to receive a Small Cities Initiative Grant offered by MSDA. Big Rapids was awarded a $1 million grant and will match that with $1 million. The projects included in the grant are Downtown Streetscape Improvements, Pocket Park Improvements, Riverwalk Connection, Downtown Facade Improvements, Wayfinding Signage system, and a Cultural Center (to be housed in the Artworks building).  | Project Description: The Twin Creek Rain Garden, located in Evart, Michigan, was completed in August 2007. The rain garden is designed to accept stormwater from the Evart City Hall parking lot. The rain garden will absorb the stormwater and filter out pollutants before the stormwater reaches Twin Creek. Almost four hundred wildflowers were planted into a bed prepared by loosening the soil to a depth of two feet and mixing in 14 cubic yards of composted leaves from the city compost yard. The rain garden is being temporarily irrigated from Twin Creek until the plants are established. Project Role: Landscape Architect, Project Manager Construction Budget: $ 5,670.  | Project Description: Marlies Manning designed a Healing Garden along with the site plan for the new Immanuel Lutheran Church building in Big Rapids, Michigan. The Healing Garden concept was incorporated into the design for the new church by creating a space enclosed by three wings of the church. The Garden will be immediately visible through large picture windows when entering the church. The Healing Garden is intended to be used for quiet contemplation, or small ceremonies in the 15 foot diameter "Ceremony Circle" seen here. The congregation has spent almost 2 1/2 years raising funds for the concrete walks. Project status: Trees and shrubs will be installed the first of July, 2008.  | Project Description: The Big Rapids Wayfinding System is being funded in part by the Vibrant Small Cities Grant. Manning Design, LLC and Wilcox Engineers are being retained to design entry signs, directional signs, parking signs, and pedestrian orientation signs. The signs will assist visitors in finding downtown, parks, civic buildings, and community districts. Project status: Conceptual drawings and cost estimates will be completed end of July 2008.
